Private jet makers like Gulfstream, Bombardier, and Embraer are taking their flagship offerings to new levels of luxury, technology, and performance.
But some customers have decided to convert commercial airliners from Airbus and Boeing for private use.
The cost of these aircraft ranges from tens of millions of dollars to hundreds of millions of dollars.
When it comes to private jets there are some that are a cut above the rest. These days, a select lucky few are taking luxury air travel to new heights with state-of-the-art ultra-long-range executive jets from manufacturers such as Gulfstream, and Bombardier. And then there are those bold enough to convert commercial airliners into opulent flying palaces.
It's all very impressive.
So we here at Business Insider have assembled what we believe to be a collection of the most luxurious private aircraft in the world. Naturally, this list is fluid and subject to change. After all, Elon Musk might surprise us all one day with a "pimped out" SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule mounted atop a Falcon Heavy rocket or if a company like Zunum Aero gives us an electric private jet.

Hey guys! I usually live stream X-Plane flights but since it has the tendency to act up and glitch, I figured it would be easier to just record this one. Since I always fly commercial/"heavy metal" airliners, I figured it would be fun to fly a private jet. I immediately noticed how much easier and less cumbersome it is to fly, and it is a lot more fun. This is a Gulfstream IV (I think) for X-Plane 11. I fly from Houston to Palm Beach. Enjoy!

Flying in an airplane can be a tortuous experience as you need to get to airports hours before the scheduled departure time to clear security. So you need to wait for a long time in the airport. Then, in the flight, you might get seated next to an annoying passenger. If the flight is long haul, you’d end up feeling cramped and suffer stiffness. Plus, the food might not be all that good. For these reasons, rich people who can afford it prefer to buy their own private jet.
1. Boeing 747 – $153 million
The 747-8 is one of Boeing´s most successful models. An unnamed client has customized his private plane with luxuries such as fully equipped bathrooms, private living room, a master suite with stunning views, a guest cabin with en-suite bathroom, and a private office. Other amenities include big screen TVs, low tables, two living areas with sofas, dining room for 14 guests, and a large meeting room. The client spent about $200 million for the facilities. No wonder the plane finds a place in our list of most expensive planes. This amazing aircraft can hit a speed of about 645 miles per hour on a 9,200-mile flight.
2. E-2D Advanced Hawkeye – $232 million
This unusual military plane is used by the US Navy as a replacement for the earlier E-1 Tracer. It is an all-weather, carrier-capable tactical airborne early warning aircraft, meaning that it has seriously advanced APY-9 radar systems, an advanced radio suite, integrated satellite communication capability, turboprop engines, a tactical glass cockpit, and advanced electronic scanning. Basically, this is the ultimate plane for surveillance and reconnaissance.
3. C-17A Globemaster III – $328 million
This Boeing plane was developed for the US Air Force, and it is one of their largest military transport aircraft. The C-17A is used for strategic and tactical airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo, medical evacuation, and airdrops.
4. Air Force One – $660 million
Air Force One is a triple decker with 4,000 square feet of space. This gives all passengers plenty of leg room to stretch their legs. The plane can easily hit a speed of 650 miles per hour. For medical emergencies, there is a mini hospital on board with specialist doctors and an operation theater. The aircraft is equipped to survive meteor strikes, earthquake, and nuclear war. In case of an attack, it deploy flares to counter heat-seeking missiles, ECM (electronic countermeasures), and radar-jamming technology. The plane has mid-air refueling abilities and can be refueled even at 35,000 feet. However, President Donald Trump wishes to get rid of this facility to save money.
Air Force One has sophisticated communications technology with 85 phones, 238 miles of electronic wiring, 19 televisions, a range of computer connections, fax machines, and two-way radios. It hosts two well-stocked kitchens with amenities to feed a 100 people. During a terrorist strike, it can operate as a command center. Air Force One is always given priority over other air traffic. But this does not impact commercial air traffic as this plane usually lands and takes off from military bases in the US. The plane can accommodate 100 passengers and 26 crew members.
5. B-2 Spirit – $737 million
The B-2 Spirit was launched in 1989. The program to develop it was initiated during the Carter administration in the late 1970s. Northrop was chosen to build this fighter plane. The highlight of its design is a technique called “continuous curvature” which deflects radar.
The B-2 costs about $135,000 per hour to operate. It has a flying range of 6,000 nautical miles, and refuels every six hours. The plane has amenities such as a hot plate to prepare food, a bed, and a toilet. One pilot can sleep at a time on long missions, minimizing fatigue during round-the-clock flights. The fighter jet has a quadruple fly-by-wire flight control system, split brake-rudders, and differential thrust to maneuver which keeps its radar cross-section low. Its engines are concealed in the wing, hiding fan blades from radar, and reducing the engine’s heat signature to prevent detection by infrared tracking systems. Finally, the B-2 can hit a top speed of 1,010 km/hour.

Private jets are truly wonderful to experience, believe me... but the expense involved in acquiring one can be quite expensive. As for private jet cost, depending upon the make, model and size, to buy one outright, you might be looking at spending between 5 and 65 million dollars. Not too terrible, if you can afford it. Now, while owning a private jet can seem to be the most convenient form of private jet access, it can also be the most expensive. And by expensive, I'm not merely talking about money here. Allow me to explain...
With sole ownership, you are of course fully responsible for the initial purchase price, licensing, regular registration fees, hangar fees, airport fees, pilot for hire, regulations, flight logging data, fuel costs, fuel expenditure logging, maintenance and the list goes on (and on) - and remember, most of these things can represent a constant cost of quite a pretty penny indeed, even if the plane never leaves the hangar. Owning a private jet might be a dream of yours, but if you're a mite jittery about taking on the huge private jet cost in exchange for a bit of luxury, it can be pretty darned difficult to write out that very first check. Even if you've found private jets for sale at an auction, and picked one up for only a small few million, the ongoing private jet cost is the very same, and certainly without discount.
But with private jets, sale prices can vary greatly. Among the things to consider when you purchase a private jet is the factor of flying range and jet size, which can vary private jet cost considerably. For example, if you chose to purchase a light jet, perhaps a Learjet for example, which can average at about $5 million or so to buy, the plane would hold between six to eight passengers, with about a 1,500 mile flight range without refueling. You'll need to precisely understand what specific realm your needs reside in, in order to decide on the right make and model that's best for you. Charter a few short flights to get the feel for each major type. You may find medium jets are more to your liking than light jets, such as a Hawker 800, for example.
Aircraft fractional ownership of a private jet, sharing it with a single co-investor, can provide greater travel flexibility at half the cost of sole ownership, however many aviation experts warn that most aviation partnerships eventually sour. This problem can be further compounded with more owners holding shares of the plane. Aircraft fractional ownership can start at 1/16 of a share (that's 16 owners of just one plane), which may be as low as roughly about $400,000, for say, a Hawker for instance. That generally allows for about 50 hours of flying time. This would equate to be about $8,000.00 per hour of flight - on a cost per hour of flight basis, that is not much cheaper than a charter jet service at all. But aircraft fractional ownership has never been easy - why? Have you ever experienced the headaches of time-sharing a condo? Yeah, that's why.

After spending the day with Magnuson Superchargers we received an invitation to an exclusive event at a private airplane hangar where the organizer brought out some of the most expensive supercars available for rent.
So after grabbing a drink at the bar and a bite to eat we took a tour of not only all of the luxury cars on display but also hopped inside a few private jets and multi-million dollar helicopters to get a brief taste of what life must be like for the select few.
The event which was hosted by Midway Car Rental finished with us leaving in the Mercedes G63 AMG that was on display.

There's a new HondaJet in town, and it's ready to coddle passengers with more creature comforts and take them further.
Honda unveiled the new HondaJet Elite on Sunday and confirmed the aircraft's capability to travel 1,437 nautical miles.
The latest iteration in the HondaJet line includes additional sound deadening for the engine to create a quieter cabin, automatic stability and protection functions to enhance flight safety. As for the creature comforts, the aircraft features a "speaker-less" sound system inside the cabin. Rather than speakers, parts of the interior themselves will vibrate to create sound. There's also a new galley with a built-in coffee bar and two-tone leather seats. Finally, just in case of turbulence, the restroom now features a seatbelt for the toilet.
Honda said in the announcement that the added range reflects a 17 percent improvement over the previous aircraft with the capability to travel an additional 246 miles. In addition to the added range, Honda said the HondaJet Elite is the most fuel-efficient craft in its class while maintaining best-in-class speed and altitude.
The HondaJet Elite will be on display at the 2018 European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland from May 28-31. The company did not provide details on pricing, but don't expect the Elite model to come cheaply. The original HondaJet went on sale last decade with a $3.65 million price tag.

5. Embraer Lineage 1000E: This is the first of the converted airliners on the list. It's based on the popular Embraer E190 regional airliner. The spacious $53 million 1000E can be configured with a master bedroom and a walk-in shower. If you are extra bold, however, Embraer's design chief, Jay Beever, will gladly offer you some of his truly over-the-top interior concepts — like the Kyoto Airship and its astonishing skylights ... ... or the Hollywood Airship, which conveys the style, glamour, and luxury of Tinseltown in the 1930s.
4. Bombardier Global 7000: Like the G650ER, the Global 7000 is designed to be the ultimate long-distance, purpose-built private jet. The $73 million aircraft is set to enter service in the second half of this year. The cabin can be configured in a variety of ways, including a with full dining room ... ... and a multimedia theater. The Global 7000 is even available with a private bedroom. It's an important option, given the plane's more than 8,500-mile range — that means nonstop from New York to Sydney, Australia.
3. Airbus ACJ319Neo: The ACJ, or Airbus Corporate Jet, is the business version of the Airbus A319neo airliner. The ACJ319neo costs $101.5 million before the installation of custom interior fittings. The jet has a range of nearly 7,800 miles and can fly nonstop from Los Angeles to Geneva, Switzerland.
2. Boeing 787-8 BBJ: This is a state-of-the-art, $224 million carbon-composite airliner. In 2016, China's HNA Group spent an additional $100 million to turn one into a private jet — or, as Boeing calls it, a BBJ, or Boeing Business Jet. It's the brainchild of Kestrel Aviation Management's Stephen Vella. Since this is the first Boeing Dreamliner purpose-built to be a private jet, the interior, and its fittings had to be custom engineered from scratch. The interior is a whopping 2,400 square feet. That means space for you and 39 of your closest friends. There's also a master suite with a California king bed, a walk-in closet ... ... and a master bath with a double-size shower and heated marble floors.
1. Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental BBJ: As stunning as the Dreamliner may be, nothing compares with the "Queen of the Skies." One lucky customer received his very own personalized Boeing 747-8I private jet. At this year's prices, the 747 before any customization work costs $403 million. The interior boasts nearly 4,800 square feet of space, roughly the same as your average McMansion. The plane has a full office ... a bedroom ... and a stately dining room, which can be converted into a corporate boardroom.

Private Jets is a Swedish power pop quartet, founded in 2001 by the twins Erik and Per Westin.
The band started out as a song writing project, the brothers curious to see if they could mix their influences of pop, rock and jazz into their own brand of power pop with ambiguous lyrics and smart arrangements. Janne Hellman was recruited as lead vocalist together with Mikael Olsson on bass, Olsson who had previous worked with the brothers in the hi-speed pop outfit Revolver Bop Agents.
First release Private Jets released the debut EP “A Four Leaf Clover in E-Major” on May 27, 2002 on Sparkplug Records. It contained four songs and a short snippet and was well received by the power pop community. The songs were written, arranged, produced and to a large extent performed by the brothers. Lead vocals was provided by Janne Hellman on all tracks and Olsson played bass on the song Millionseller.
In a radio interview on Swedish Radio, Erik Westin explained that the band were basically writing what they wanted to hear but couldn’t really seem to find anywhere. He also said that the ambition with the band is to write the ultimate pop song over and over again.
Second release After the release of “A Four Leaf Clover in E-Major” the brothers started to work on a new album. The band bio states that they wrote 43 new songs to be able to make an album filled with singles only. It says that they would strive for nothing less than power pop perfection. Of the songs written, the band chose to record twelve, and the result can be heard on the album “Jet Sounds”, released on May 26, 2008.
Live gigs In May 2008 Private Jets made their live debut at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, playing the International Pop Overthrow. An extra show was added.
On Saturday November 7, 2008, the band played at the International Pop Overthrow in New York City, performing at Kenny’s Castaways in Greenwich Village.
