Cool facts about the history of ART BASEL.

In 2002, Art Basel established its second permanent location, Miami Beach. With a concerted effort to launch an internationally renowned art fair in America, the directors, gallerists, collectors, and curators of Art Basel chose Miami in December, the perfect time and place where people would go to enjoy themselves on vacation and spend part of their week reveling in the magic of contemporary and modern artworks from thousands of talented international artists and galleries. There have been a lot of unexpected stories, fascinating art works, and eye-popping figures that have emerged from the 15 years since Art Basel found a home in Miami. Here, we countdown a list of fun facts and historic moments in the evolution of America’s most notable art show.

1. Art Basel began in 1970 when Ernst Beyeler, Trudi Bruckner and Balz Hilt of Basel, Switzerland, created an international art fair that proved to be a success from the star

2. More than 16,000 visitors attended the inaugural show in 1970 to see 90 galleries and 30 publishers from 10 countries. Only five years after its founding, the Basel show had reached its current size of almost 300 exhibitors. The participating galleries came from 21 countries, attracting 37,000 visitors.

3. The first Art Basel Miami was supposed to debut in December of 2001, but was cancelled due to 9/11 and anthrax scares. Inadvertently a tradition was born that fitful first year, when local art collectors like Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz and Don and Mera Rubellthrew open their homes to showcase recent acquisitions, a makeshift alternative after a slew of problems caused the directors of Art Basel to cancel the Miami Beach Convention Center.

4. Art Basel made its official Miami Beach debut in 2002. Miami in the winter offers a pleasant change of temperature and humidity and is therefore seen as the best possible fit for an expansion of Art Basel. The International Art World regards Miami as one of the most attractive place to be in winter.

5. During the inaugural year, a radical new sector was introduced to the Art Basel line-up under the title of Positions, with galleries exhibiting young artists near the beach in temporarily converted shipping containers.

6. In 2003, yet another new sector was introduced to Art Basel Miami. The Nova Sector begins its long run in Miami Beach, focusing on recent works by artists of all generations
